September 7-17

September 9: Have been very busy with other things so am working on this off and on. Sanding, planing, and now RASPING! Yes, I discovered and now own a rasp. This handy, cheap little tool is saving a lot of time as I correct my sloppiness and mistakes, especially around the cockpit area.

Let's see, things accomplished:  made the bigger hatch cover, finished (thank God!) planing the edges, re-fiberglassed the front of the hull.

Also, Tuesday, I fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a 5" random orbit sander. I am tired of hand-sanding and hope this will produce a more beautiful result, faster.

Here is the latest picture in front of the shed in which my beauty is stored. You can't see the shed though.

September 15: Installed the rubrails yesterday and they look really good. Planning this weekend to sand all of the epoxy and paint the hull with primer. Then I'll take her home and do the rest there. It's too difficult to work on this at the office.

September 16: Hurricane Floyd is not making working on the kayak any easier. It's been raining for 2 days and I won't get a chance to work on it until this weekend. We're surrounded by tall trees and right now big branches are falling all around us. If a tree falls on the shed and crushes the kayak after all this work, I'm going to kill myself.

September 17: It took me over an hour to go 4 miles in New Jersey this morning because of all the flooding. Got to work to find that the shed had flooded! It is right next to a stream (technically I could kayak to work but that is not how I want to spend my mornings). Luckily I had moved my tools and other supplies to higher ground yesterday and the kayak apparently floated in the shed. I guess she IS a seaworthy vessel. Someone just suggested I name her after the hurricane. Floyd is not any better than Gordon.

I just found my rasp amongst some wet leaves in the shed. I must have missed it when I moved my tools before the flood. I now have a rusty rasp. My hurricane casualty.
