Day Eight, Thursday, August 26 |
Yesterday was a day of rest for me, but not for the Mets. They beat the Astros 4-0. |

I now have a nicely beveled edge to my kayak and a
nicely muscular right forearm. I used a plane for the first time and it was pretty
fun but it took about 4 hours. I had to bevel the edge so the deck (top) of the kayak
has more surface area to be glued to as it wraps around the deckbeams. It was tough to
figure out what angle to make the edge. The bevel is flat at the ends of the kayak
and then "rolls out" as it nears the center. The instructions showed how to make
a template to figure it out, but I was impatient and did it by eye. I will see on
Saturday how well I did as I try to wrestle the deck on. I can always bevel more
tomorrow. Putting the deck on involves bending a large piece of plywood over the
deckbeams and nailing it into place. It's a two person job. I tried it myself and was
surprised at how stiff the plywood was - how much resistance it gave. It doesn't
seem like nails will hold it down.
I want the kayak basically finished by Sunday night. I have a lot of work to do finishing (more epoxy, sanding and painting) it but I want to do that OUT of my apartment because epoxy dust is very toxic and I really don't want my cats to die. I put the kayak on the floor yesterday and got inside. It's quite snug. I've taken white water kayaking lessons but I'm thinking this will be a little different - there's going to be a lot less room in this one. It's a lot longer but seems narrower. |
