The Launch! |
October 2: Mom was in town so I thought it would be a perfect weekend for the launch. Put 4 coats of varnish on in preparation (but did a rather sloppy, impatient job-doing a perfect varnishing job will be my spring project). Also installed the foot braces and the seat, but it's not quite done - I haven't put the rigging on the deck, or put on grab handles. Woke up early Saturday morning, lugged the kayak down the stairs and attached it to the car. |
Drove to New Jersey to White Meadow Lake where my friend Tony has his kayak docked - went here so mom could come with. Carried it to the end of the dock and got in. I was very nervous that it would slowly but surely start to fill with water, or that I would go right through the bottom. But it's remarkable how strong that thin plywood has become. |

She performed perfectly, no leakage whatsoever, easy to maneuver. It was wonderful! (The black straps are temporary until I install the rigging.) It's very fast - meaning for the energy I expend, she goes fast and my paddle is really light. |
It was mom's first time in a kayak. She did great! We went around the lake for about an hour. |
