Day Seven, Tuesday, August 24

Epoxyed before I went to work again.  Fourth coat. And it's not smooth at all - really patchy.  I'll have a lot of sanding to do.   They say boat-building is 95% sanding.

Tried to lift the boat today - seeing if the epoxy added much weight  (it's supposed to end up about 42 pounds) and it was sooo heavy!  I couldn't pick it up.  I was shocked until I realized I had glued the kayak to the sawhorses.  I'm tired of epoxy. I'm tired of typing the word epoxy. I keep typing expoxy and have to correct it.

Trimmed the fiberglass and installed the two deckbeams. They are the pieces of wood that will give the deck its curved shape. Had to trim the wood to fit and it was difficult to saw the two angles correctly on that curved piece of wood (the vertical and horizontal angles). I am excited to install the deck - it will seem almost finished. First though, I have to bevel the edges of the kayak so the deck slopes evenly. We'll see how my new Stanley block plane performs.

Saw a kayaker on the Hudson on my way home from work today.  The boat seemed so small against the choppy water!  This project has me noticing bodies of water much more closely than I ever have before. The Hudson can be quite placid in the mornings. Sometimes perfectly smooth.

I'm posting your votes about the hull color.

I won't work on the boat tomorrow because I'm going to the Mets game after work.   As satisfying as this is, it's nice to take breaks from it!
