Pier 26, New York City, Saturday, October 16

Discovered today was the last weekend for free kayaking at the Downtown Boathouse. It was a beautiful day. Met my friend Steve at 1:00 and we walked down the esplanade to Pier 26. Each of us got a sit-on-top kayak and a life preserver and we set out. We had to stay in the enclosed area of the pier but at times the waves (I believe wake from barges) were quite large and a few times the waves broke on top of the boats! Got soaking wet but it was fun. It made me a little nervous for my day trip on the Hudson tomorrow. Apparently there can be huge waves out there - even though I took white water kayaking lessons, it was a LONG time ago and I've turned into a nervous nellie.
